I'm really unsure as to why this isn't an illustration of irony in the Oxford English Dictionary. Ed Byrne is right, though - it would indeed be ironic if her knife/spoon mismatch stopped her doing whatever she needed to do, then found out the next day that a spoon would have, in fact, done the job...
